WHAT IS PRENATAL MASSAGE?

Prental Massage is a specialized form of massage therapy tailored to the unique needs of pregnant women. It aims to alleviate common discomforts associated with pregnancy, such as back pain, muscle tension, swelling, and fatigue, while promoting relaxation and overall well-being for both mother and baby.

How it Differs from Regular Massage:

Positioning:

We offer a variety of comfortable and safe positioning options for prenatal massage, designed to support you and your baby throughout your pregnancy. These include:

  • Side-lying with bolsters: This is the most common position for prenatal massage. We use specialized pillows and bolsters to support your body, ensuring proper alignment and comfort.

  • Inclined tables: Our unique tables can be adjusted to incline, allowing you to lie face-up while relieving pressure on the vena cava, a major vein that carries blood back to the heart.

  • Prone pregnancy bolsters: These specially designed bolsters have cutouts for your belly and breasts, allowing for a comfortable and relaxing experience (as pictured above). We have two of these bolsters available.

Techniques:

Gentle and rhythmic strokes are used to relieve muscle tension and improve circulation, avoiding deep pressure on the abdomen and lower back. Therapists trained in prenatal massage are knowledgeable about the physiological and anatomical changes during pregnancy and use techniques that are safe and effective for expectant mothers.

Focus Areas:

Prenatal massage often focuses on areas that are commonly affected by pregnancy, such as the lower back, hips, legs, and feet. It can also help relieve tension in the neck and shoulders.

WHAT TO EXPECT

We are here to help you connect more deeply to your health and wellness journey. Our prenatal massage sessions are designed to provide you with a safe, comfortable, relaxing, and pain-relieving experience as your body changes throughout pregnancy. You deserve to feel good in your body, and massage can help alleviate those common pregnancy aches and pains.

A Personalized Approach:

You will fill out an intake form providing information about how many weeks along you are and any health concerns. Your massage therapist will then discuss your individual needs, preferences, and any specific areas of discomfort or tension.

Safe and Comfortable Positioning:

  • Face-Down: We utilize the Earthlite pregnancy bolster, allowing you to comfortably lie face-down even during your third trimester. This innovative bolster supports your belly and breasts, ensuring proper alignment and optimal comfort.

  • Face-Up: For face-up positioning, we use incline bolsters or an incline table to ensure your comfort and safety. This helps to reduce pressure on your vena cava and promote optimal blood flow.

  • Side-Lying: We also offer a side-lying bolster system for additional support and comfort in this position. This helps to alleviate pressure on your hips and lower back.

Gentle and Effective Techniques:

Our therapists are trained in prenatal massage and will use gentle, yet effective strokes to alleviate muscle tension, reduce swelling, improve circulation, and promote relaxation.

Focus on Your Needs:

Whether you're seeking relief from back pain, neck tension, or simply want to de-stress, your therapist will customize the massage to address your specific needs.

A Peaceful Environment:

Our massage rooms are designed to create a tranquil and soothing atmosphere, allowing you to fully unwind and enjoy your session.

BENEFITS

Physical Benefits

Reduces muscle aches and pains:

As your body changes and your baby grows, you may experience discomfort in your back, neck, shoulders, hips, and legs. Massage can help alleviate these aches and pains by relaxing tense muscles, improving circulation, and reducing inflammation.

Decreases swelling:

Massage can help reduce swelling in your hands, feet, and ankles by stimulating lymphatic drainage and improving blood flow.

Improves circulation:

Massage enhances circulation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and your baby.

Eases joint pain: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can loosen your joints, leading to discomfort. Massage can help soothe and stabilize joints, providing relief.

Prepares the body for labor:

Regular massage can help your muscles relax and prepare for the physical demands of labor.

Mental and Emotional Benefits

Reduces stress and anxiety:

Pregnancy can be a stressful time. Massage promotes relaxation and reduces stress hormones, helping you feel calmer and more centered.

Improves mood:

Massage increases the production of endorphins, which are natural mood boosters, and can help combat depression and anxiety associated with pregnancy.

Enhances sleep quality:

Massage can improve your sleep patterns, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

Provides emotional support:

The nurturing touch of a massage therapist can offer emotional support and a sense of connection during this transformative time.

Potential Benefits for Labor and Delivery

May shorten labor duration:

Some studies suggest that regular prenatal massage may lead to shorter labor times.

May reduce the need for pain medication during labor:

Massage can help you manage pain naturally, potentially reducing the need for medication during labor.

May contribute to a smoother postpartum recovery:

By promoting relaxation and reducing muscle tension, massage may help you recover more quickly after childbirth.

WHO SHOULD RECEIVE PRENATAL MASSAGE?

Prenatal massage is generally considered safe and beneficial for most healthy pregnant women. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare provider before receiving any massage during pregnancy, especially if you have any specific health concerns or complications.

Some Groups Who Can Benefit from Prenatal Massage:

Women experiencing common pregnancy discomforts:
